The Garden Theatre Went Dark in 2024. This Month, Winter Garden Gets Its Marquee Back.

Walk down Plant Street on a Thursday evening this month and you will see something that has not been true since October 2024: light coming from inside 160 West Plant Street, and a line forming under the marquee. The Garden Theatre is running a live show again. Footloose: The Musical opens September 24 and runs through October 11, and it is the first time in two years that a full-length production has actually filled those 295 seats.
That gap matters more than a single closure usually does, because of what the theater sits near. It is a short walk from Crooked Can Brewing inside Plant Street Market, from the Farmers Market pavilion, and from the restaurants and shops that make up historic downtown. For two years, that corridor has had a daytime identity and a drinking-and-dining identity, but no reason to be there specifically at 7:30 on a Tuesday. That reason is back.
The theater's resident company had run productions there for sixteen years before it dissolved abruptly in October 2024, citing financial trouble. The City of Winter Garden, which owns the 1935 building, stepped in that December with holiday programming, but what followed through most of 2025 was closer to hibernation than operation: family films during the day, classics at night, cashless and online-only ticketing, no box office on site. It kept the building lit for holiday classics, but it was not a working theater.
Behind the scenes, the city spent 2025 hiring a performing arts consultant, drafting a business plan, and putting out a request for qualifications for a long-term operator. Seven proposals came in. On April 23, 2026, the city commission voted unanimously to hand the two-year presenting agreement, running through April 2028, to DNA Event Creative, a production company based right there in Winter Garden. The city keeps scheduling priority and final approval over what goes on stage, a condition aimed at keeping the venue family-friendly, but day-to-day programming now belongs to a company that has been producing live events for more than twenty years.
The season that opened this summer is not a soft relaunch. It is a full calendar:
DNA's executive creative director, Dennis Morgan, has described this first season as a love letter to the original 1935 cinema, built to honor the fact that the space started as a movie house and is now both a movie house and a live venue. What is notable is not just that the theater booked a season. It is that the people running it are explicit about why the seats matter beyond the seats themselves.
"Every time we have a show, you're anticipating a full theater. The spillover of that is, they're going to go to dinner before the show, they're going to go have a cocktail before the show, they're going to grab coffee before the show. We want to see them spilling into the streets to support the restaurants, the stores, everything around the area."
That is a member of the DNA Productions team, quoted in the Orange Observer's coverage of the season announcement. It is worth sitting with, because it names the actual mechanism at work here. The theater is not just entertainment. It is a scheduled reason for a couple hundred people to be on Plant Street at 6:30 on a weeknight, looking for somewhere to eat first.
That timing lines up with something else that happened while the Garden Theatre sat mostly empty. Harlow Grove Restaurant & Bar opened in March 2026 at 186 South Main Street, a few blocks from the theater, in the Smith & Main complex. It is a two-story concept from Knallhart Management Group, the same group behind The Whole Enchilada and Harrell's Hot Dogs, and it was built specifically as what general manager Dustin Huckins called something different for the corridor: a cocktail-driven lounge downstairs, a full dining room upstairs, and a terrace shaded by a century-old oak tree that Huckins has described as feeling like a garden, with leafy planters and string lights running through the branches.
Huckins told the Observer the goal was a menu that could handle a regular Tuesday as easily as a special occasion, pointing to the steak frites and a French dip sandwich as the kind of dishes people would come back for without needing an excuse. On Fridays and Saturdays the full dinner menu runs until 11 p.m., with a late-night menu continuing until 1 a.m.
A restaurant built for a casual weeknight crowd opened five months before a theater built to send a weeknight crowd looking for dinner. Neither business planned around the other on paper. But the effect on the ground is the same: two anchors going up on the same few blocks, each one betting that Winter Garden's downtown can support people showing up after dark for a reason that has nothing to do with the farmers market.
Winter Garden's downtown identity has been built almost entirely around Saturday mornings. The Winter Garden Farmers Market runs every Saturday, year-round, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., drawing more than 100 vendors and enough of a crowd that American Farmland Trust has repeatedly named it the best farmers market in the state. That reputation is real and it is earned, but it also means the corridor's peak hour has historically been mid-morning on one day of the week.
What the Garden Theatre's return adds is a different peak hour entirely. A Footloose performance running through mid-October means multiple weeknights and weekend evenings this fall where downtown fills up after 6 p.m. instead of emptying out. Combine that with Fridays on the Plaza, the city's standing Friday-night outdoor concert series in the center of historic downtown, and Plant Street now has programming on both ends of the week and both ends of the day.
This is not a claim that Winter Garden has become a nightlife destination overnight. The corridor is still small, still walkable, still built around independent shops and a handful of bars like The Attic Door and Pilars Martini rather than anything resembling a club scene. But for two years there was a specific, obvious gap where the community theater used to be, and the people who grew up going to shows there noticed. The venue's return is not filling an abstract need. It is filling a hole that had a street address.
Footloose runs now through October 11, with performance blocks September 24 to 27, October 1 to 4, and October 8 to 11. Individual tickets and season packages are available through the theater's official season page. If dinner beforehand is part of the plan, Harlow Grove stays open late enough on Fridays and Saturdays to catch a post-show drink on the terrace under that oak tree. Crooked Can, inside Plant Street Market, is the other obvious stop for a drink before or after the curtain.
None of this requires planning far ahead. That is the point. For the first time since 2024, a weeknight in downtown Winter Garden has something on the calendar that isn't tied to a Saturday.
